Welcome to the Honey bee class with Miss Peace and Miss Hiner.  This page is for our parents and children to use together. It includes information about what Y4 are learning, key dates, homework and helpful websites.

Autumn Term

Our topic for Autumn 1 is… 

‘Ruthless Romans’, it will take us back over 2,500 years to the time when Romans created an incredible empire across Europe. We will be learning about Roman invasions including their interactions with the Celts, Roman inventions, gladiators and famous landmarks that can still be found in Rome today!

In English we will be investigating our class animal through writing a fact file. We will be writing a newspaper report and a diary entry based on the book Julius Zebra: Rumble with the Romans!

In Maths we will be learning place value up to 1000. We will be rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.  Also, we will be learning about partitioning numbers up to 10,000. We will be expanding on our knowledge of Roman numerals before we moving on to formal written methods for addition and subtraction.

In science, we will be learning all about electricity. Using electrical equipment we will be creating an electrical circuit. We will be understanding how circuits can be altered using the equipment that is used. And we will be learning all about conductors and insulators.

Other learning:

In Design and Technology, we will be creating an electrical game. In music, we will be creating motifs. In Religious education, we will be learning about what it means to be a Christian today. In addition, we will be having a day to celebrate Diwali. In computing, we be learning about computer systems and networks; this will involve us looking at how to access the World Wide Web. In RSHE, we will be learning if all friends are the same, if friendships are always fun and if we are happy all the time.

Our topic for Autumn 2 is…

Our second topic, ‘What is Europe?’ will take us all over Europe on a mission to find out all the cities in Europe, famous landmarks and all the physical features they have. Do countries still have Roman landmarks visible in them today? We will be finding out about the Mediterranean Sea and which countries it boarders.

In English, we will be writing a myth and a playscript based on a mid-summer nights dream.

In Maths, we will continue securing our knowledge of the formal written methods for addition and subtraction. We will be learning all about the area of shapes. Following on from this, we will we looking at multiplication and division facts.

In science we will be learning all about the digestive system and food chains.

Other learning:

In art, we will be completing an artist study of Antoni Gaudi and looking at Roman mosaics. In computing, we will be looking at creating media and editing audio. In religious education, we will be learning about how life is a journey and revisiting the importance of the Christmas story. In RSHE, we will be learning how to make the world fair, how do you know you belong and how can we help the poor around us.

Important Information

Our P.E days will be Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure your P.E kits are in school for these days and are labelled with your name and your class.

Our swimming lessons will be Thursday every week until December.  Please make sure children remember their swimming kits.

Our weekly Spanish lesson will be on Wednesday.

Our weekly spelling test will be on a Friday.

Our weekly times tables test will be on a Wednesday, but we will be practising times tables every day.

World Bee Day – Tuesday 20th May 2025 (We will celebrate this day by dressing in yellow and black colours.)

Honey bees Home Learning

Each half-term, we will send out these bingo grids for you to complete at home. Tick off an activity once you have completed it. It would be lovely to see any pictures or completed pieces of homework! You will get a Honeybee token for every piece of work you complete and share.

Other home learning activities for Autumn 1 are:

  • Read to an adult at least 4 times a week and record this in your home learning book.
  • Practise your spellings. Can you use each spelling in a sentence? Can you give the definition of each spelling?
  • Practise all times tables up to 12 x 12. Can you answer quick fire questions in and out of order?
