Welcome to the Year 5 class page. The staff at Waverley Primary Academy are looking forward to welcoming you back for our final half-term. On this page you will find key information regarding the exciting things we have planned this half-term. In the meantime, have a look at the home learning activities you can have a go at.

In Geography, our final topic, The Caribbean, will help us investigate the question: “What makes trade fair?” Children will explore the countries and cultures of the Caribbean, learn about the products that are grown and exported there and develop an understanding of global trade. Through studying Fair trade, pupils will consider how producers, workers and consumers are connected and discuss why fairness and sustainability are important in today's world.

In Science, we will be learning about growing up and life cycles. Children will explore how living things change throughout their lives and compare the life cycles of different animals. We will be answering questions such as:

  • What are the stages of a mammal’s life cycle?
  • What are the stages of an amphibian’s life cycle?
  • How do animals grow, reproduce and change over time?

Through investigations, observations and discussions, pupils will deepen their understanding of the processes that enable living things to survive and thrive.

In PSHE, we will be exploring the concept of Citizenship. Children will learn about their rights and responsibilities within school, their local community and the wider world. They will discuss what it means to be a good citizen, how they can contribute positively to society and the importance of respect, fairness and inclusion. This unit will encourage pupils to think about how their actions can make a difference to others.

Finally, in Design and Technology (DT), our Caribbean theme will continue as children design and prepare their own Caribbean-inspired dish. They will develop key food preparation skills, learn about ingredients commonly used in Caribbean cooking, and consider how food reflects culture and tradition. This practical project will provide opportunities for creativity, teamwork and evaluating finished products.

We look forward to an engaging and enjoyable half term filled with opportunities for discovery, discussion and hands-on learning.

Detailed planning can be found on the subject pages under the Curriculum tab.
