Welcome to Year 6

Dolphins - Mrs Rose/Mrs Eades & Mrs Milner

Jaguars - Mrs Pridmore & Mrs Wright

Welcome to the Year 6 class page.  We are so excited to have you here for your final year in primary school – we cannot wait to see you flourish.  Year 6 is full of learning, fun and new challenges as we get ready for secondary school.  Keep checking this page for updates, news and all the exciting things we will be doing this year!

Our topic for this half term is…

The Mighty Maya

In English, we will start the term by writing a biography about the author Judith Kerr.  Our writing will then take its inspiration from our mentor text ‘Oh Maya Gods’.  This book is written by Maz Evans, who also wrote ‘Who Let the Gods Out’ a book the children read in Year 5.  We shall be comparing characters and looking at family links.

In Maths, we will be looking at decimals.  Children will start to understand decimals as fractions and fractions as decimals.  It is also key for them to have a sound understanding of place value and how to multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.  We will also be learning about equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.  The children will also be introduced to algebra before completing a recap of converting units of measure.

In our topic lessons, we will be learning about the Maya Civilisation in history.  We will be exploring what life was like in the Maya and how it compared to life in Britain.  In science, we will be learning about evolution and survival of the fittest.

Key vocabulary pupils will learn through this topic can be found in the table below:
